Last night, I spoke to my dear friend Donna on the phone for a much-needed catch up. Years ago, I prayed and prayed for a mentor that didn’t necessarily feel just like a mentor but a close friend. There was no sign of one for a long time and then suddenly I found my way into my home church in Sacramento and stumbled into Donna’s home for a bible study. She was the most hospitable person I’ve ever met. Not only would she make you herbal tea or dinner when you stopped by, but she was willing to be present with you for hours, on the couch with a warm blanket, if you needed to talk. She engages, she asks good questions, she follows up, she makes you feel seen and heard and loved. It was the most natural mentorship relationship I’ve ever been in because it was really just true friendship. I think those are rare. And as I said to her last night, even though it’s easy to become more distanced with physical distance, I never want to let being present here and now minimize the value of relationships back home. They are just as important to me today. Thank you Donna, for being a home in human form and for all those hours of Poldark and chocolate ice cream bars and decorating churches and poolside afternoons. You are a gift to the world.
Christmas has always had my heart, but I don’t know — there’s something special about autumn this year. With all the feasting and friendship and fall colors ahead, I’m really sinking my feet into this time of thanksgiving. Nashville, even on the darker or sadder days, you’re renewing me and helping my heart feel full and rich and grateful. Friends, even when things go awry, the one thing we can stake our life on is that the Lord is GOOD and His loving kindness endures forever. #LetUsKeepTheFeast
When the Smoky Mountains call with their delicious autumn colors, you answer with a spontaneous road trip—where we encountered bluegrass, bison, babbling brooks, and a black bear on the loose.
It’s a good day for ponderings, instrumental playlists, quiet drives into the Franklin countryside, and bittersweet goodbyes.
